After undergoing coronary by-pass surgery, Dr. Decker's commitment to the integration of mind and body health became more personal. He recognized commonalities between heart patients, their belief systems, and their emotional intelligence. Dr. Decker has been counseling patients with chronic disease for the past 12 years. He learned that many of his patients were struggling with unhealthy behaviors-- not because of a lack of motivation-- but because of a lack of capacity. Their lifestyles robbed them of energy needed for exercising self control.

The Center for Cardiac Wellness was opened in 1998 to treat clients who were seeking support and guidance after being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease . Dr. Decker has counseled hundreds of heart patients to understand the hidden factors that contributed to the onset of their disease, and how to modify those factors. His findings led to his first book "A Change of Heart ". His second book, "Cardiac Wellness: Nine Steps to a Healthy Heart" has been accepted for publication by Nova Science Publishers and will be available March 2009.
